About me

My name is Helena Suarez. I am originally from Uruguay and I am a qualified Pilates Mat-work Instructor living and working in London.
I have worked for over 10 years in the non-governmental organisation sector, developing websites for campaigning organisations such as Amnesty International, CAFOD, ONE and the Global Call to Action against Poverty. I spent most of my working life behind a computer and eventually started to feel the creaky aches and pains related to bad posture and repetitive tasks.
Realising the importance of looking after my body, I set out to find a way to improve my posture and get fitter. I tried a variety of things -- from swimming to spinning to yoga -- until I finally found Pilates.
It may sound cheesy, but I really was amazed at the results I achieved after just a few sessions: Pilates helped me develop an awareness of my body in space that I was previously missing. My core muscles gained strength, and this in turn reduced pain in my lower back, added a few inches to my height and removed a few inches from my waistline! I also found that going to Pilates classes helped my concentration and provided a space in my life for focused relaxation.
I completed my training as a Pilates Mat-work Instructor (CYQ Level 3) in June 2010 and have been delivering one-to-one and group classes since February 2010. Apart from private clients, I am also teaching group sessions at Nuffield Health and Virgin Active gyms. I am a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals and fully insured. I have also completed a Pilates & Pregnancy course, which qualifies me to teach ante- and post-natal classes. As well as Pilates qualifications, I have completed an introductory training to Sports massage, which has deepened my ability to correct postures during sessions and facilitate stretching and recovery. I am also currently on course to qualify as a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner.
I really enjoy teaching because I want to pass on the benefits of Pilates and see my clients develop, strengthen and become excited about looking after themselves.
My current training regime includes cycling for transport, swimming, Zumba and, of course, Pilates.
