Why Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. He believed that mind and body should work together and he developed a series of exercises designed to work with focus and concentration, alignment, breathing, centring, flow, control, coordination and relaxation.
34 Pilates movements, together with their adaptations for different abilities and body types, comprise the Pilates repertoire. The One Hundred, Single Leg Stretch, Jack Knife, Rolling Like a Ball, Side Kick, Scissors, Swan Dive, Swimming, Bridge and Spine Twist are just some of the exercise you may encounter. The workout can be done on a mat, or using specialist equipment at a Pilates studio.
A typical Pilates mat-work session will last one-two hours, in which you will perform exercises that strengthen your core – the muscles of your abdomen and pelvic floor, challenge your posture and alignment in different positions – standing, seating, side-lying, semi-supine, prone or on all fours, and improve your body awareness. You will also work your flexibility and there may be some balance work.
Is it for me?
Probably! Pilates is a very safe form of exercise, when performed using the correct technique. It’s low impact and promotes good posture and flexibility. Pilates Instructors are trained to adapt the exercises to different body types and condition, as well as different abilities, to make Pilates accessible to everybody. So if you would like to strengthen your body, become leaner and increase your body awareness, then Pilates could be for you.
